"전자산업 분야 모든 정보 한번에 열람"

조영봉 힝스 사장(45)의 명함은 앞 뒷면이 다르다. 국문·영문면이 합쳐진 그런 흔한 양면 명함이 아니다. 한 면엔 휴대폰 힌지·발광다이오드(LED) 전문업체 힝스의 직함과 연락처가 적혀있다.

다른 한 면은 국내 최대 디스플레이 관련 모임인 ‘밍그라빠의 디스플레이 포털(밍그라빠)’ 매니저로서 조영봉 사장을 위한 공간이다.

“우리 포털의 강점은 전자산업분야 모든 정보를 한 번에 열람할 수 있다는 것입니다. 물론 이 같은 정보는 자발적 활동에 힘을 아끼지 않는 회원들의 노고 덕분입니다.”

까페지기로서 의례상 하는 얘기가 아니다. 실제로 밍그라빠 포털의 힘은 각 분야 전문가들을 망라한 회원들에게서 나온다.

조 사장이 이끌고 있는 밍그라빠는 2007년 개설 이래 3만명이 넘는 회원을 거느릴 정도로 급성장했다. 누적 방문자 수는 200만 명을 돌파했다. 친목 모임이 아닌 특정 산업분야 모임 중 국내 최대다. 가입인사 등 친목활동을 위한 게시물을 제외하고도 매일 100개가 넘는 산업 관련 콘텐츠들이 쏟아진다.

조 사장은 “직접 등록하는 기사 스크랩 외에 운영진과 회원들이 등록하는 고급 정보들이 까페에 게시된다”며 “참여와 공유가 까페의 핵심 키워드”라고 강조했다.

최근 조 사장이 추진 중인 작업은 밍그라빠 포털의 영역 확장이다. 당초 디스플레이에 초점을 맞춘 ‘버티컬 포털’로 시작했지만 이제는 전자산업 전체로 외연을 넓히기로 했다.

따라서 까페 주제인 ‘DISPLAY’에 대한 의미를 재창조해야 했다. 조 사장은 “디스플레이(Display)·정보기술(IT)·반도체(Semiconductor)·태양전지(Photovoltaic)·발광다이오드(LED)·애플리케이션(Application) 머릿글자에 ‘당신의 강력한 커뮤니티(Your powerful community)’의 첫글자를 합치면 DISPLAY가 된다”고 설명했다. ‘꿈보다 해몽’이라지만 최근 까페에 새로 등록되고 있는 글 중, 이 6가지 산업 범위를 벗어나는 것은 거의 없다.

그는 “회원들에게 좀 더 고급정보를 제공하고 각종 행정 업무를 담당하기 위해 얼마 전 오프라인 사무국까지 오픈했다”며 “운영진들이 교통비 지원만 받고 일하지만 회원들의 성공 비즈니스를 위해 힘든줄 모르고 뛰고 있다”고 말했다.

Electronics industry information, all in one place

The two sides of the business card carried by Young-bong Cho, 45, president of Hings, are different. It is not the usual double-sided card with Korean on one side and English on the other. One side lists his title and contact details at Hings, a company specializing in mobile-phone hinges and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The other side is reserved for Cho in his role as manager of ‘Minkrappa’s Display Portal’ (Minkrappa), Korea’s largest display-related community.

“Our portal’s strength is that information from across the electronics industry can be accessed in one place. Of course, we owe this to the hard work of members who devote their efforts to voluntary participation.”

This is not simply a courtesy remark from a community manager. In fact, the strength of the Minkrappa portal comes from its members, who include experts from a wide range of fields.

Since its launch in 2007, Minkrappa, led by Cho, has grown rapidly to more than 30,000 members. Its cumulative visitor count has surpassed two million. It is Korea’s largest community devoted to a specific industry rather than general socializing. Even excluding introductions and other social posts, more than 100 pieces of industry-related content are posted every day.

Cho emphasized, “In addition to the news clippings I post myself, the organizers and members contribute valuable information to the community. Participation and sharing are its key principles.”

Cho’s latest undertaking is to expand the scope of the Minkrappa portal. It began as a ‘vertical portal’ focused on displays, but he has now decided to broaden its reach to the electronics industry as a whole.

This meant reinterpreting the meaning of the community’s theme, ‘DISPLAY.’ Cho explained, “Taking the initials of Display, IT, Semiconductor, Photovoltaic, LED and Application, then adding the first letter of ‘Your powerful community,’ gives us DISPLAY.” It may be a creative reinterpretation, but few of the community’s recent posts fall outside these six industry areas.

He said, “We recently opened an offline secretariat to provide members with more advanced information and handle various administrative tasks. Our organizers receive only transport expenses, but they work tirelessly to help members succeed in business.”

The quality of a connection

Technical information becomes useful when it meets a practical question. Comparing experience across disciplines helps people identify relevant expertise and consider alternative approaches. For GPN, the significance of this archive lies beyond scale: sharing specialist knowledge can broaden how companies understand their work.

A manufacturing perspective on shared knowledge

Precision manufacturing requires an understanding of materials, processes and the environment in which a product will operate.
